WITH SO MANY DIFFERENT SIZES TO CHOOSE FROM, IT CAN BE CHALLENGING TO DECIDE WHICH BOARD IS RIGHT FOR YOU
Picking out your first (or even second!) skateboard can be perplexing. Opting for a complete skateboard is always the best choice for beginners, as it includes all the components needed to start skating immediately. Here, we’ll explore various boards to help determine which one is best for you!
SKATEBOARDS FOR KIDS AGED 6-9 YEARS
There isn’t a specific age that is deemed perfect to start skateboarding, but 6 years old is often considered a suitable age to begin, provided the appropriate safety gear is used.
At this stage, a child should ride a ‘Mini’ Skateboard. A mini skateboard is typically defined as any board shorter than 31” in length, or less than 7.5” wide. The trucks and wheels are scaled down in proportion to the board size with mini skateboards, creating a smaller, lighter board.

SKATEBOARDS FOR KIDS AGED 9-13 YEARS
By the age of 9, a child should be ready to transition to a full-size skateboard. A full-size skateboard should be 31” or longer and wider than 7.5”. Full-size boards typically range up to about 8.5”, but for younger skaters, anything between 7.5” and 8.0” wide is ideal.
Narrow boards are easier to flip and pop, whereas wider boards provide more stability and more space to land tricks. Because of this, narrower boards are better suited to street skating, while wider boards are better for ramp or park skating.
As always, it’s advisable to try several different boards to determine which one you feel most comfortable with before making a choice. You can view our selection of full-sized boards between 7.5” and 8.0” here!

SKATEBOARDS FOR KIDS AGED 13+ YEARS
Any board between 8.0” and 8.5” would be suitable for this age. The same rule applies regarding board width and style – a narrower board is more suited to street skating, and a wider board is more suited to skate parks or ramps.
For more advanced skateboarders at this age, custom skateboards are also an option. Although a full set-up would be slightly more costly, it allows the rider to fully customise their board to suit their exact preferences.
