Which Deck Size Suits You Best?

What Is The Best Deck Size For You?

Choosing your first skateboard can feel overwhelming, which is why we've created this skateboard deck size guide to assist you in figuring out the best board for you!

Various skating styles correspond to different board sizes and shapes, so it's crucial to select a board that matches your style and, most importantly, your personal preference. Each brand provides decks in different shapes and sizes, and even if two boards are the same size, they might not necessarily look or feel identical!

Sizes

Mini Pro

Mini pro boards are generally 7.5 inches wide or less and measure under 30 inches in length. Designed specifically for younger skaters, these boards present a smaller version of a skateboard – perfect for those who might find it challenging to pop, flip, or ride a full-sized board! These boards are typically sold as complete setups and are targeted at young skaters under the age of 9. Height, skill, and preference are key factors in determining what's best for you, so at this stage, it's advisable to try out a few different sizes before making a decision!

7.5 - 7.9 Inch Boards

This range represents the smaller end of full-sized boards. While older skaters still use boards of this size, they are particularly suitable for younger skaters who might have smaller feet. Boards within this width are better suited for street skateboarding, as they are easier to flip and pop!

8.0 – 8.4 Inch Boards

Boards within this range are versatile as they offer an ideal middle ground, suitable for both street and transition (ramp) skating. It's important to remember when purchasing that the wider the board, the better it will be for transition skating, and the narrower the board, the more suitable it will be for street skating. A wider board provides more landing space but will be more challenging to flip than a smaller board. Again, it's worth experimenting with a few sizes to find what feels most comfortable for you!

8.5 Inch+ Boards

Boards of this width are often favored for skating styles that involve less popping and flipping. Providing more room for foot placement, boards of this size are suitable for vert and bowl riding. If you're searching for something to cruise on and for general transport, these boards offer the most comfortable ride.

Concave

Concave refers to the depth of the curve in the board. Different brands offer varying curvatures, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.

Concaves range from flat to deep. A flat concave feels more comfortable underfoot and makes shuv tricks easier, but flip tricks can be slightly harder. A deep concave works in the opposite way – it might feel uncomfortable underfoot over long periods, but it will make flip tricks easier. Boards with deeper concaves are generally stronger and less prone to snapping.

While this guide provides some useful general advice, your choice of board should always be based on your personal preference. It's always beneficial to try out various sizes and shapes and to modify your choice as you grow and your skills progress, as you might be surprised by what suits you best!
