The Ultimate 2026 Roller Skating Guide

The start of a year is an ideal moment to try out something new, push your limits, and discover activities that keep you active while having fun, and roller skating fits all those criteria perfectly, plus more.

Whether you're entirely new to skating or you've been inspired by watching skaters glide smoothly through parks, rinks, and streets, there's never been a more opportune moment to begin. Roller skating is not only an excellent way to stay active; it also serves as a creative outlet, boosts confidence, and offers an opportunity to express your unique style on wheels. Moreover, it's an activity enjoyable for all ages, whether you're skating alone or with friends.

In this blog, we will cover everything you need to know to start your roller skating adventure correctly. From essential beginner advice and must-know techniques to guidance on staying safe and looking stylish while skating, we've got you covered. So if you or someone you know is keen on learning how to roller skate, look no further, let's lace up, roll out, and learn to skate in style in 2026.

Starting off:

So you've just purchased your first pair of roller skates, where do you begin? The first step is to stand, which is easier said than done with skates. You should start by positioning your feet and legs in a V-shape. Gradually stand up and sit back down until you get accustomed to it.

From this position, practice a move known as 'forward bubbles'. This involves creating bubble-shaped circles with your feet by swiveling them inwards and outwards. It can be done either while moving or while stationary. Another move to try is called 'train chugs', where you move one foot backward while moving the other foot forward. This helps you get used to moving forwards and backwards on skates.

Now that you're on your feet and ready to start skating, here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Keep your head up. Look forward with your chin up, not only to see where you're heading but also to maintain your balance.
  • Position your legs shoulder-width apart to avoid falling. If they are too close or too far apart, it becomes more difficult to balance.

  • Engage your core to help you find your center of gravity.

  • Don't forget safety gear! It's the most important aspect of skating, as it protects you and others around you in case of falls.

Here are some safety gear items available at SkateHut that every skater should have:

SFR Youth Ramp Triple Pad Set - Black

The SFR Youth Ramp Triple Pad Set is a comprehensive junior protection kit designed to keep young riders safe and confident while skateboarding, scootering, rollerblading, or just cruising around. This set includes knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards, providing full coverage for the key impact zones that beginners are most likely to bump or scrape. With durable SFR impact caps and heavy-duty fixing rivets, the pads absorb knocks and abrasions, allowing kids to push their skills with added peace of mind. Soft, comfort-lined interiors and elasticated socks ensure they are comfortable for longer sessions, while secure hook-and-loop (Velcro) straps keep each guard fitting snugly without restricting movement.

SFR Essentials Helmet - Matt Black

The SFR Essentials Helmet – Matt Black is a versatile and budget-friendly protective helmet designed for riders of all ages and abilities. Whether you're cruising the streets, hitting the skatepark, scootering, or cycling, this helmet provides reliable safety with a sleek matte finish. Constructed with a robust high-impact ABS outer shell and EPS foam inner core, it effectively absorbs impacts while remaining lightweight and comfortable to wear. A series of ventilation holes ensures airflow to help you stay cool during long sessions. The helmet includes dual foam padding inserts that allow you to adjust the fit for snug, secure comfort, and adjustable chin straps make it easy to lock in your ideal position.

CORE Mouth Guard

The Core Mouth Guard is a moldable gum shield designed to protect your teeth, gums, and jaw while engaging in skateboarding, scootering, BMX, or other action sports. Made from impact-absorbing materials, it reduces the risk of dental injuries from knocks or falls that can occur when riding hard or pushing your limits. This mouth guard features a moldable design that allows you to custom-fit it to your bite for a comfortable and secure feel, and its shape permits unobstructed breathing even when in place. A premium dual-layer construction adds extra durability and protection, while the classic CORE logo on the front gives it a sporty look. It comes with a plastic carry case with air vents, allowing for hygienic storage between sessions, making it a practical addition to your protective gear bag.

Continuing on:

Now that you're up and moving, where do you go from here? Well, you can move on to more advanced movements when you feel at ease. For instanceturning. When turning, it is important to understand that your entire body is involved in this movement. Begin by scissoring your skates; the foot leading the turn should be the direction you wish to go (e.g., if you want to turn right, lead with your right foot). Then, turn your shoulders in the direction you are heading and place your weight on the outside edge of the leading foot and the inside edge of the back foot. Lean in the direction you want to go, and there you have it! Remember to practice your movements consistently and get comfortable on your skates.

Another basic technique you need to learn is how to stop. There are three main ways to halt: the T-stop, the scissor stop, and the two-toe stop.

T-stop:

For the T-stop, form a T shape with your foot. Place your left foot sideways behind your right foot, which remains facing forward. This creates drag, and you should continue doing this until you come to a full stop.

The scissor stop:

For the scissor stop, quickly move your left foot back behind your right with about a shoulder-width distance in between. Then switch to your toe stop and wait until you come to a halt.

Two toe stop:

The two-toe stop is slightly more advanced, as losing balance is easy. Simply switch to using your toe stops on both skates to create friction, which will bring you to a complete stop. However, be cautious, as doing this incorrectly can send you flying.
