Changing your skateboard wheels is a basic maintenance task and can be accomplished with a few tools. If you have the necessary materials, swapping your wheels is an easy job you can do at home or at the skatepark.
How frequently should you change your wheels and bearings?
You'll know when it's time, but it largely depends on how often you skate. Skateboard wheels usually last a long while, but once they start to cone or develop flat spots, it’s a clear sign it’s time to get new ones.
The same applies to your bearings; if you don’t keep them clean or regularly skate in the rain, they won’t last long.

Tips to Extend Lifespan
To prolong the lifespan of your wheels, try to avoid rough surfaces (like rocks and gravel). It's a bit more challenging if you are a street skater. Rough terrain can damage your wheels, causing flat spots and decreasing performance.
You can rotate your wheels. For instance, if your front wheels wear out faster than the back ones, switch them so the back wheels are now at the front of the skateboard. This will help distribute wear more evenly across all four wheels, extending their life.

Materials needed
- T-shaped skate tool
- Trucks or a skate tool with an attachment for removing bearings
- New skateboard wheels
Steps
1: Remove Your Old Wheels
Use your skate tool to loosen the axle nuts and slide the wheels off the truck. Don’t misplace the washers on either side of the wheel as you’ll need them later.
2: Remove Bearings from Old Wheels
Remove the bearings from the wheel by prying them out with the truck axle. Slide the wheel on halfway so one bearing is on the axle, then twist the wheel outward and around until it pops out. Repeat this for the other side. You might have spacers between the two bearings, so keep those aside too.
3: Insert Bearings into New Wheels
Slide a bearing, shield side down, onto the truck, then take your new wheel and press it onto the bearing until it pops in. You’ll need to apply some pressure to get it on, but it will pop right back in. Flip the wheel over, repeat the process, and you’re done. Remember to reinsert the spacer before installing the second bearing if you use them.
4: Installing Your New Wheels
The next step is simple. All you need to do is place your wheels on the axle, make sure to include those washers on either side of the wheel, and tighten the axle bolt until your wheels are secure and spin freely. Ensure you don’t over-tighten.
