Since today is International Women's Day, there's no better way to honor it than by highlighting 5 women who have made significant impacts, or are currently making waves, in the worlds of Skateboarding, Scootering, and Roller Derby. The most fitting place to begin is with...
Elissa Steamer - Professional Skateboarder
Elissa is the trailblazer of women's skateboarding. She broke through the largely male-dominated skate scene after showcasing her immense talent in Toy Machines' 'Welcome to Hell' DVD and soon became the first-ever female professional skater. You might also recognize Elissa from her appearance in the iconic Tony Hawk Underground game in 2003, where she was the first, and only, playable female character in the series. With Gold medals in 4 out of her 6 appearances at the X-Games, there's no question in our minds that Elissa is one of the all-time greats in Skateboarding.
Estro Jen - Bowl/Street Quad Skating & Founder of Moxi Skates
Michelle Steilen, also known as Estro Jen, has been at the forefront of the revival of outdoor and bowl skating from Southern California to London. When she's not tearing up the boardwalks of LA or selling charming, candy-colored skates, you'll find Estro Jen hosting skate discos from her leopard print ice cream van.
Marina Lopez - Scooter Rider
Being a part of the Vex Flow Team and releasing some of the hottest street edits currently out there has made everyone take notice of Marina Lopez. With features in Scoot Mag boosting her profile, 2015 was a significant year for her, and the sky's the limit for 2016.
Stefanie Mainey - Professional UK Roller Derby
Stefanie Mainey brings a unique blend of skills to the Roller Derby scene; if you consider her Power and Accuracy, and then add her Judo prowess, you have a winning Roller Derby formula. Leading your national team is no small task, and to do it with the ease and composure that Mainey has shown is even more impressive. She's a formidable force in the Roller Derby world, and including her on our list was an obvious choice.
Leticia Bufoni - Skateboarder
Competing in the X Games at any age is a significant achievement. So, to be 14 years old and competing in a mostly male sport at the highest level makes that achievement even greater. Securing endorsements with Nike , Grizzly , Plan B , Nixon , Oakley and Bones Wheels makes Bufoni one of the most prominent figures in contemporary skating.
There you have it, our top 5 women who are making waves in the skate and scooter scenes. We've surely left out some big names from our list - so who would be in your top 5? Let us know in the comments.
