While Skating, Scootering, and BMXing are our main focus here at SkateHut, we cannot deny our passion for football as well.
Based on conversations in our office and warehouse, we have selected SkateHut’s favorite World Cup moments from previous tournaments to share with you!
Joe Cole vs. Sweden 2006 –
During the 2006 World Cup in Germany, England faced Sweden in the final match of their group stage. Michael Owen suffered a severe injury just four minutes in, and things were looking bleak. Then, Joe Cole scored with a spectacular volley from well outside the box. The match ended in a 2-2 draw, but England finished first in their group.
David Beckham vs. Greece 2001 –
"Give that man a knighthood!" This was the shot that secured England’s place in the 2002 World Cup. With England trailing 2-1 in the 93rd minute, their chances seemed slim. After Teddy Sherringham was fouled, Beckham stepped up for a free kick from outside the box and scored, sending England through to the World stage.
Spain vs. Netherlands 2010 Final –
With the score at 0-0 and just four minutes remaining in the 2010 final, Andres Iniesta scored a goal for Spain, securing their first-ever World Cup victory and solidifying his status as a Spanish football icon.
England's Victory - 1966
An obvious highlight. England’s first - and only - World Cup win. After Geoff Hurst’s hat-trick, England emerged victorious in the final at Wembley Stadium, claiming the title of 1966 World Champions. Here’s hoping for a repeat this year!
Gazza’s Tears – 1990
An image that epitomizes England’s 1990 World Cup campaign. Gazza’s Tears came after receiving a yellow card, a moment that resonated nationwide as England was subsequently eliminated by Germany in this match!
Suarez Handball – 2010
Known for his controversial past, Suarez prevented Ghana from advancing to the 2010 semi-finals by handling their shot off the line in the dying moments of the game. He was sent off, and Ghana was awarded a penalty, which they missed. Suarez’s tears turned to joy as his foul inadvertently helped his team reach the semi-finals!
Diana Ross Penalty Fail – 1994
The most amusing moment occurred during the 1994 World Cup opening ceremony. Popstar Diana Ross’s performance included taking a penalty kick with a keeper who clearly wasn’t planning to stop it. It seemed impossible for her to miss – but she did! The show continued, and Brazil went on to win the 1994 tournament.
We are excited to watch the World Cup unfold over the coming weeks and eagerly anticipate witnessing new, unforgettable moments. Come on England!
