Cities with Skateparks - Part 4

Skatepark Cities - Part 4

Our newest installment in the skatepark series spotlights Brighton. Red Bull has dubbed Brighton as the UK's hidden scene, a place where coastal chaos can unfold. Let's dive in and explore Brighton's skateboarding credentials.

Brighton boasts a longstanding skateboarding tradition and hosts one of the oldest scenes in the country.

From freestyle skaters to longboard enthusiasts, Brighton has a vibrant skating culture and likely has the most cruisers outside of San Francisco. The city's unique vibe fuels the flourishing subcultures.

As a result, Brighton has been the birthplace of influential figures like Ian Deacon, Don Brown, and Darran Nolan.

On a lighter note, Brighton is also home to Bodhi the dog, a YouTube skateboarding sensation. You can watch Bodhi's skills below, though unfortunately, he recently received an ASBO for his skateboarding antics on public pathways, so we don't advise replicating his street style on Brighton's sidewalks.

1. The Level

The Level has been around for many years. However, it was completely revamped in 2013 and now stands at the heart of Brighton's skate scene.

Featuring a 1,400 sq. meter polished concrete skatepark, all the old wood has been entirely removed. It includes a plaza-style street section and a transition area, offering something for everyone, regardless of their skating preferences.

The park was designed with input from the Brighton & Hove Skateparks Association (BHSA), representing the local wheeled sports community. This ensured that skaters' best interests and desires were integral to the park's creation. The result is a venue that caters to riders of all skill levels and experiences.

The street section is well-organized, featuring banks, hips, rails, kickers, both flat and curved ledges, a pyramid, and ample space. There's a wide variety, and mastering all the lines could take endless hours.

The transition area is centered around two bowls. The main bowl has a distinctive shape with varying depths, a roll-in, and coping along the edges – it promises an engaging ride.

• Opening times: Unsupervised access around the clock

• Charge: Free

• Address: The Level, Union Road, Brighton, Sussex, BN2 3HD

2. Hove Lagoon Skatepark

If your trip to Brighton includes the beach, then Hove Lagoon Skatepark is a must-visit.

Hove Lagoon's standout feature is its proximity to the beach, allowing you to hear the waves crash as you skate.

The park includes both street and transition elements. It has a 4.5ft mini ramp at one end, with a quarter and flat bank connected to each platform, leading into the main section. Here you'll encounter a driveway with hips, a hubba, and a ledge. Opposite, there's a 5ft bank with a drop box in the center.

It's an ideal place for skating as the sun sets. While it may not offer the variety found at The Level, the setting and views are exceptional.

Other nearby parks like Woodingdean Skatepark and Hollingdean Skatepark are decent but somewhat basic. Hove Lagoon is our top choice.

3. Brighton Youth Centre Skatepark

Don't be misled by the name; Brighton Youth Centre welcomes people of all ages. It's the only indoor skatepark in Brighton and primarily features wooden structures on a concrete floor.

Besides drop-in sessions where you can just show up and skate, there are dedicated tuition sessions available for all ages and skill levels. There is a session for young children, one specifically for adults, and even She Shredders sessions exclusively for women and girls.

The park itself is centered around a funbox, with hips, ramps, ledges, and a hubba flanked by a flat bank box on one side and a quarter on the other. Various obstacles are scattered throughout the park, including two ledge boxes (one with an incline), a small ramp box, and a quarter with a long vert extension. It's designed to offer something for everyone, regardless of ability level.

• Opening times: Evenings. Times vary by day.

• Charge: Prices vary based on age and whether tuition is needed. Find the full list of opening times and prices for Skatepark Locations .
