Ten Essential Etiquette Guidelines for Skateparks

The Skatepark is like a second home, the first stop in the morning before school or work, and the place we go after. It's where we hang out with friends on weekends, and it's hardly ever empty.

Most Skateparks display signs with rules, but there's also an unspoken code of conduct that Skaters follow, known as Skatepark etiquette.

Learn to Skate first

While it may be tempting to jump straight into the Skatepark, it's crucial to feel confident with the basic Skating skills before heading there. Regardless of your level of experience, as long as you grasp the basics ofSkateboarding, you'll be able to navigate most parks with moderately steep ramps.

Avoid figuring out a Skatepark during busy hours

If you're new to Skating, try to visit when the park is likely to be quiet. Mornings are usually best, as kids are at school and adults are at work, giving you the park mostly to yourself.

On the other hand, the least ideal times to Skate and practice are typically early evening, late afternoon, and weekends. These are peak times when the Skatepark is crowded, and if you're a beginner, you might find yourself in the way.

Respect each other

Kindness goes a long way. No matter if someone is on aBMX, Scooter, Skateboard or Roller Skates, everyone has the same right to be at the park. Don't ridicule those with less ability or those who are learning. Offer help, encourage improvement, and foster a safe and welcoming environment where people feel motivated to learn and engage in the sport. Don’t be a gatekeeper; remember everyone started as a beginner at the Skatepark. Use the park respectfully and treat others well, and they will return the kindness.

Keep the Skatepark Clean

Depending on how much time you spend at a Skatepark, it might feel like a second home. For some of us, we actually spend more time at the Skatepark than we do at home.

Don’t litter, tidy up after yourself. If you maintain the Skatepark, it will take care of you.

Pro tip: Bring a broom, towel, brush, and shovel. They're incredibly useful for quick cleanups and a great way to earn respect from the locals.

No Snaking

We’re not talking about reptiles here. We're referring to Skaters who recklessly and consistently cut in line. Proper Skatepark etiquette dictates waiting for your turn. Someone is bound to get hurt if you lack patience. Whether it's a bowl, mini-vert, orMini Skate Ramp, it's strictly one person at a time. Remember, others are also using the Skatepark, so give them their chance.

Shout ‘Board’

If you fall or lose control of your Skateboard, shouting 'BOARD' can help prevent accidents and collisions with another Skater or bystander. Skaters appreciate a warning that a board is headed their way, especially when it's moving quickly. Most people are focused on Skating rather than looking out for flying boards.

Ledges aren't benches

When taking a break from riding, avoid sitting on or occupying any part of the Skatepark course. Most Skaters will kindly ask you to move.

Don't forget about the spectators. If anyone you bring along isn't Skating, there are benches available for sitting and watching.

Remember to supervise your kids. The Skatepark is not a playground, and your children could get hurt. Don't let them climb on theSkate Rampsor run across the Skatepark.

Skate Protection

Even though wearingSkate Protectionisn't mandatory, Skateboarding is a risky sport. We advise everyone to wearHelmets, Knee Pads and Skate Protective Gearwhen using the Skatepark.

Just Ask?

Can I drop in? Are you using this rail? Can I wax it? Do you want to play SKATE? Can you show me how to Ollie? All these questions are polite yet straightforward, and they are also excellent for making friends.

Hype each other up

There's no greater joy than landing a new trick you've been working on for days, weeks, or even years. A wonderful way to display proper etiquette is to always encourage others and congratulate them. Did someone land a trick? Tap your board on the ground or shout out to the Skater. Support everyone, from young to old, beginners to pros, and always remember what a Skatepark is truly about. It's a place where people come together to develop and share their passion for Skateboarding, Roller Skating, BMXing, and Scootering.
