Reflecting on another successful year for TeamGB with gold medals in Paris 2024, we find ourselves pondering which other events would be exciting to include in future Olympics. As specialists in outdoor action sports, there are clearly many activities that could be fantastic, such as roller derby, aggressive inline skating, or downhill longboarding. With skateboarding and BMX riding already popular events, perhaps it's time to introduce more sports like these into the Olympics. One sport that particularly comes to mind is stunt scooter riding.
Over the last ten years, this sport has seen tremendous growth, not just in the UK, but globally, proving to be both physically challenging and highly entertaining to watch. We've witnessed numerous exciting competitions featuring some of the best riders, facing off in events like the CORE open, World Championships, and even our own Scoot Royale event.
Skateboarding has set a precedent for these kinds of sports to be considered for the Olympics, although the primary concern remains the potential for injuries due to the high-risk nature of these activities. However, improvements in protective gear, such as durable knee pads and elbow pads materials and helmets constructed from innovative substances that are incredibly strong, help mitigate the risk of injury. Stunt scooter riding is no exception, with tricks that involve whips and flips, which only the most skilled riders can perform.
The events for stunt scooters would be divided into park and street categories, following the same format as skateboarding, allowing for both women's and men's heats in each. This would also allow the skateboarding venue to be used for an additional sport, attracting more spectators. There are numerous competitors we would love to see in the Olympics, including Jamie Hull, Jordan Clark, Kai Saunders, and many more emerging talents.
Fortunately, the World Skate Director is submitting a proposal to include stunt scooter riding in the next LA 2028 Olympics, so we're keeping our fingers crossed. Hopefully, one day we will see the expansion of urban sports categories, providing additional opportunities for TeamGB to secure more gold medals, and if it happens, SkateHut will be there to support them!
